Bin 28 offers a showcase of warm climate Australian shiraz – ripe, robust and generously flavoured. First made in 1959, Bin 28 was original named after the famous Barossa Valley Kalimna vineyard purchased by Penfolds in 1945 and from which the wine was originally sourced. Today, Bin 28 is a multi-region, multi-vineyard blend, with the Barossa Valley always well represented.

Winemaker Notes
A deep, dense cherry-black in color—dark and brooding. Primary aromas of blackberry fruits and black olive tapenade segue to black jelly bean and soot. It is reminiscent of the burnt crystallized crust of a freshly (over) baked fruitcake. Caramelized black fig, quince and juniper add to the evocative mix.

There’s an enlivening acidity that drives the palate with malleable tannins supporting a chewy, appetizing mouthfeel. Notes of bitter chocolate, pipe tobacco and a mass of dark-berried fruits throughout.

Critical Acclaim
Wine Spectator – 93
Ripe blackberry, blueberry and framboise flavors are plump and balanced, with notes of rosemary, sage, black walnut liqueur, Dutch cocoa powder and dried violet, followed by wonderfully velvety tannins on the finish.

Vinous – 93
Deep, bright-rimmed ruby. Smoke-tinged cherry liqueur, cassis and licorice scents, along with hints of cured tobacco and mocha. Gently sweet and lush on the palate, offering concentrated dark fruit, floral pastille and roasted coffee flavors that are sharpened by a peppery nuance. The long, supple finish echoes the dark berry note and is framed by velvety, even tannins. Made in all used American oak. Best After 2026

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate – 92
The 2019 Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz blends fruit from McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Wrattonbully and puts it into used American oak hogsheads for a year prior to bottling. Scents of vanilla jump out on the nose but quickly recede under a wave of gently caramelized plums and cherries. Full-bodied and supple on the palate, it’s concentrated and lush, with a rich, velvety finish. Once again, it’s a fine value in South Australian Shiraz, and exported to the U.S. in reasonable quantities (9,054 cases).

James Suckling – 91
Has quite a distinctive McLaren Vale nose of ripe red and dark-plum aromas, as well as spice and cedary oak. The palate delivers a creamy feel and a plush texture. Good all-round appeal, well-curated and medium-bodied. The obsolete “Kalimna” badge has been dropped with this release. A blend of McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Wrattonbully. Drink while young.
